Elope in the Tatra Mountains
Granite peaks, glacial lakes, wooden chapels and the highlander culture of Podhale – the Tatras are one of the most beautiful places in Central Europe to say “yes”.
I am a licensed Tatra guide living at the foot of the mountains. I help couples from abroad with the location, the national park rules, the Polish paperwork and a safe, unhurried day in the mountains.
- Legal civil weddings in the Tatra National Park (TPN) are allowed only at 8 designated places – e.g. Morskie Oko lake, Rusinowa Polana meadow, Kasprowy Wierch summit, the Jaszczurówka chapel. Park fee: 2,500 PLN (Jaszczurówka chapel 1,000 PLN) [1].
- Polish registry office fees: 1,000 PLN for a ceremony outside the office and 84 PLN for the marriage certificate. You sign a declaration at a registry office at least one month before the wedding [2].
- Foreigners need a certificate of legal capacity to marry, sworn Polish translations of documents and an interpreter at the ceremony [2][3].
- Many couples marry legally at home and have a symbolic elopement in the Tatras – no Polish paperwork, total freedom of location outside the park.
- A wedding photo session inside the national park costs 250 PLN per day (park fee); no drones and no leaving the marked trail [4].
Three ways to get married in the Tatras
Symbolic elopement
You are legally married at home (or will be) and want a ceremony in the mountains.
- Any beautiful spot outside the park: Łapszanka chapel, Głodówka viewpoint, shepherd huts in Jurgów
- Your own vows, your own celebrant
- Short guided hike and photo session
- No Polish paperwork
Planning: a few weeks

| Place | Access for guests |
|---|---|
| Morskie Oko – by the small chapel at the lake | horse-drawn carriage or a ~2.5 h walk on an asphalt road |
| Rusinowa Polana – meadow with the best view of the High Tatras | about 1 h on foot |
| Kasprowy Wierch – summit next to the weather station | cable car from Kuźnice |
| Kalatówki – moraine next to the mountain hotel | about 40 min on foot from Kuźnice |
| Polana Strążyska – forest meadow below Giewont | about 45 min on foot from Zakopane |
| Smreczyński Staw – small lake in the Kościeliska Valley | 1.5–2 h on foot |
| Polana Chochołowska – meadow by the mountain hut | about 2 h on foot (partly by carriage or bike) |
| Jaszczurówka chapel – wooden chapel in Zakopane style | by car |
The park does not issue car access permits for wedding guests [1], so choose a spot that fits your guests. For elderly guests Kasprowy Wierch (cable car) or the Jaszczurówka chapel work best.

Paperwork for foreign couples
- Certificate of legal capacity to marry (certificate of no impediment) from your country. If your country does not issue one, a Polish court can exempt you [3].
- Birth certificates (and divorce decrees, if applicable) translated into Polish by a Polish sworn translator.
- Declaration (zapewnienie) signed in person at a Polish registry office at least one month before the wedding; it is valid for 6 months. The registrar may shorten the waiting time for important reasons [2][5].
- Interpreter at the ceremony if one of you does not speak Polish.
- Fees: 84 PLN marriage certificate + 1,000 PLN for a ceremony outside the registry office (+ park fee if in TPN) [1][2].
- After the wedding you receive a Polish marriage certificate; you can order a multilingual extract for use abroad.
Because of the one-month rule, a legal wedding requires two trips to Poland (or one long stay). That is why many couples choose a legal wedding at home + symbolic elopement in the Tatras.
Park rules you should know
- Stay on marked trails – leaving them is not allowed, also for photos [4].
- No drones during wedding sessions in the park (exception: Jaszczurówka chapel, +500 PLN) [4].
- From 1 March to 30 November you may not hike park trails between dusk and dawn; in winter between 22:00 and 5:00 [6]. Sunrise and sunset shoots are planned outside the park or with an overnight stay in a mountain hut.
- No confetti, balloons, sky lanterns or smoke bombs. Do not feed or approach animals.
- Mountain rescue in Poland (TOPR) is free, but in Slovakia it is not – get travel insurance that covers hiking.
Best time to come
September and October are the safest bet: stable weather, golden grass, larches turning yellow in late October and fewer tourists. Summer (July–August) is crowded with afternoon thunderstorms, so ceremonies are best in the morning. Winter is magical in Jaszczurówka or on a horse-drawn sleigh ride, but high places depend on avalanche conditions.
A sample elopement day
- MorningGetting ready in a wooden highlander guesthouse in Zakopane or Jurgów.
- HikeA 1–2 hour guided walk to Rusinowa Polana or Kalatówki; I carry the extra layers and water.
- CeremonyYour vows with the Tatras in the background.
- PhotosSession on the trail, then lunch in a mountain hut.
- EveningSunset at Łapszanka, dinner with highlander music or a sleigh ride in winter.
I live at the foot of the Tatras and guide in the Polish Tatras and Podhale. For couples and film crews I am the local partner who knows the trails, the light, the weather windows and the paperwork – and who makes sure everyone gets back down safely. I speak Polish and English.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You need a certificate of legal capacity to marry from your country (or a Polish court exemption), sworn Polish translations of your documents, a declaration signed at a Polish registry office at least one month before the wedding and an interpreter at the ceremony.
How much does a wedding in the Tatra National Park cost?
Official fees: 2,500 PLN park fee for a ceremony at one of the 8 designated spots (1,000 PLN in the Jaszczurówka chapel), 1,000 PLN for a civil ceremony outside the registry office and 84 PLN for the marriage certificate. Photographer, guide and reception are extra.
Where can you get married in the Tatras?
In the national park: Morskie Oko, Rusinowa Polana, Kasprowy Wierch, Kalatówki, Polana Strążyska, Smreczyński Staw, Polana Chochołowska and the Jaszczurówka chapel. Outside the park almost anywhere the registrar accepts as dignified and safe.
Can we fly a drone at our elopement in the Tatras?
Not inside the Tatra National Park during a wedding session – the park only allows it at the Jaszczurówka chapel for an extra fee. Outside the park EU drone rules and Polish airspace zones apply.
What is the best month for an elopement in the Tatras?
September and October: stable weather, autumn colours and fewer tourists. In summer plan the ceremony in the morning because of afternoon thunderstorms.
