Quick facts
  • Distance: about 9 km on an asphalt road from Palenica Białczańska car park – around 2:20 h up and 1:55 h down by the trail signs. Add about 50 minutes for Czarny Staw pod Rysami (1583 m) [1].
  • Parking: Palenica Białczańska / Łysa Polana works with an online e-ticket only, at a dynamic price (36–55 zł booked in advance, up to 85 zł on site) [2].
  • Ticket: Tatra National Park entry 11 zł (reduced 5.50 zł), best bought online as an e-ticket [3].
  • Crowds: over 1.1 million visits a year – the busiest trail in the Tatras [4]. Start before 7:00 or come on a weekday in September or October.
  • Difficulty: easy, paved and stroller-friendly to the mountain hut. The path around the lake and up to Czarny Staw is a rocky mountain trail.

The hike – Morskie Oko, Czarny Staw and beyond

👨‍👩‍👧

Easy, about 5 hours with a break at the historic mountain hut (one building dates from the 19th century). Good for families, seniors and strollers.

⛰️
+ Czarny Staw pod Rysami

A steep 50-minute climb to the Black Lake below Rysy, with the best view down to Morskie Oko. About 7 hours in total.

🥾
Rysy (2499 m)

The highest peak in Poland, with chains and exposure. Summer only for most hikers, 10–12 hours. Rysy with a guide.

🧗
Mnich (2068 m)

The famous spire above the lake. There is no trail, so it is a roped climb with a qualified guide. Climb Mnich.

Morskie Oko in winter

The road to Morskie Oko is open all year and the frozen lake under snow is spectacular. Remember three things. First, from 1 December to the end of February all trails in Tatra National Park are closed at night (22:00–5:00). Second, the trail over Świstówka Roztocka to the Five Lakes Valley is closed from 1 December to 15 May [5]. Third, above the lake the terrain is avalanche-prone, so do not walk on the frozen lake or climb to Czarny Staw without crampons and an avalanche check. Live conditions: Morskie Oko webcam, weather and avalanche report.

Tips from a local guide

  • Go early. Start before 7:00 and you will have the lake almost to yourself, with morning light on Mnich.
  • Bring cash and a card. The hut serves hot meals – try the famous szarlotka (apple cake).
  • Walk around the lake. The loop takes about 50 minutes and is much quieter than the hut terrace.
  • Layers. Even in July it can be 10 °C colder at the lake than in Zakopane.
  • Rubbish: there are no bins on the trail, so take everything back down.

Rowerem elektrycznym wokół jeziora Czorsztyńskoego. Podjazd od Brzezin do schroniska Murowaniec w Tatrach. Słowacja i wiele opcji podjechania asfaltem.By zanurzyć się w tatrzańskich szlakach. Polecam👌
