Giewont hike – the mountain with the cross above Zakopane
Giewont (1894 m), the “Sleeping Knight” with the iron cross on top, is the symbol of Zakopane. Here are the two main routes, walking times, the chained summit section, winter rules and how to avoid the queues.
- From Kuźnice via Kalatówki, Hala Kondratowa and Kondracka Pass: about 3:15 h up [1].
- From Dolina Strążyska via Grzybowiec Pass: about 3 h. The section Grzybowiec – Wyżnia Kondracka Pass is closed from 1 December to 15 May [1][3].
- Summit: the last section has chains and one-way traffic in places. On summer weekends there are queues, so start early.
- Storms: the iron cross attracts lightning. Never stay on the summit when a storm is coming.

Giewont in winter
In winter the summit dome is icy and the chains are often under ice. You need crampons, an ice axe and the skill to use them, and you should check the TOPR avalanche bulletin. The Strążyska route is closed above Grzybowiec Pass from December to mid-May. For most visitors a winter walk to Hala Kondratowa is the better choice.

FAQ
How long is the hike to Giewont?
About 3 hours 15 minutes up from Kuźnice via Hala Kondratowa, or about 3 hours from Dolina Strążyska via Grzybowiec Pass. Plan 6–7 hours for the round trip with breaks.
Is Giewont difficult?
The trail is moderate until Kondracka Pass. The summit dome has chains and steep rock, and it gets crowded in summer. In wet weather the polished limestone is slippery.
Can you climb Giewont in winter?
Only with crampons, an ice axe and winter experience, after checking the avalanche bulletin. The Strążyska route above Grzybowiec Pass is closed from 1 December to 15 May.
Why is there a cross on Giewont?
The iron cross, 17.5 m high with its base, was erected in 1901 by the people of Zakopane. It is a symbol of the town – and a lightning conductor, so avoid the summit during storms.
